The original Patterson Dealership was founded in 1969 by Richard L. Patterson Sr. as Patterson Buick/Opel.  It was located on Lebanon St. in Mt. Airy beside the Dairy Center.  The dealership location was moved in 1974 to 1935 Rockford St. (Hwy 601).  Also in 1974, GMC Truck was purchased and the collision center was founded. American Motors along with Jeep were added in 1979. The addition of Renault followed a few years later.

In 1990, the dealership, Four Seasons located on US Hwy 52 Bypass was acquired as a separate dealership.  The franchises of Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Cadillac became known as Patterson Incorporated and the Buick, Jeep/Eagle and GMC Truck dealership became known as Patterson Automotive.   The Toyota franchise was added to Patterson Automotive at the Rockford St. location.  GMC Truck and Jeep/Eagle were moved to this location so that all Chrysler products would be together.

In 1994, the Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth franchises were purchased and this dealership became known as Patterson & Associates.

In 1996, Patterson Automotive (Toyota) was moved to the HWY 52 location into a new facility located beside Patterson Incorporated, at this time, the Buick franchise was moved to Patterson Incorporated so that all General Motors franchises would be at the same location.

The original building located at 1935 Rockford St. became Patterson Collision Center in 1996 for all the dealership franchises, insurance repair and for the general public.
